Faster court approvals for minors and disabled

Beginning October 1, 2026, a Maryland circuit court can approve actions about a minor’s or disabled person’s property or care without appointing a guardian. The court may allow paying or receiving funds, selling or leasing property, or buying annuities, life‑care, or education services, and making certain estate choices. The court must weigh the interests of creditors and dependents and whether a guardian’s ongoing protection is still needed. This gives families a faster, court‑supervised path when the court has legal grounds to handle the case.

Benefits and bank records without guardianship

Beginning October 1, 2026, a court can order steps to apply for government help, like Medicaid, for a minor or disabled person without appointing a guardian. The court can also order access to the person’s bank and investment records to manage money and prove eligibility. You must ask the court for this order, and the court must have a legal basis to handle the case.
