Hospitals and surgery centers must use smoke evacuation

Beginning October 1, 2026, Maryland sets a safety rule for surgeries. By January 1, 2028, hospitals, limited service hospitals, ambulatory surgical facilities, related institutions, and freestanding medical facilities must adopt and carry out policies that require a smoke evacuation system during any surgery that may create surgical smoke. A smoke evacuation system captures and filters the smoke at the source. This protects patients and health care workers from exposure.
