Insurance covers care by supervised mental health interns

Beginning January 1, 2027, Maryland health plans must reimburse outpatient counseling, social work, and psychology services when a graduate-level clinical intern provides the care. Your plan must already cover that same service when done by a licensed professional in that field. The visit must be at an outpatient health care facility. The intern must be enrolled in a counseling, social work, or psychology graduate program. A qualified supervisor must directly oversee the session (board‑approved supervisor for counseling; licensed certified social worker–clinical for social work; licensed psychologist for psychology). The supervising professional must submit the bill. This applies to policies issued, delivered, or renewed in Maryland on or after January 1, 2027.
