Beginning January 1, 2027, for policies issued, delivered, or renewed on or after that date, Maryland health plans must reimburse covered services provided by graduate-level interns in counseling, social work, and psychology. The plan must already cover the same service when done by the relevant licensed professional. Care must be at an outpatient health care facility, the intern must be in a graduate program, work under direct supervision, and the supervising licensed professional must bill the claim. For counseling, a board‑approved licensed clinical professional counselor supervises and bills. For social work, a licensed certified social worker–clinical supervises and bills. For psychology, a licensed psychologist supervises and bills. If your plan covers a psychologist’s service, it must pay whether a physician or a psychologist performs it.
