Study on monthly pay for caregivers

Beginning July 1, 2026, the University of Maryland, College Park leads a study on a program to pay caregivers a monthly stipend for each dependent they care for. The University works with the Department of Human Services and consults the Office of the Comptroller and aging and health agencies. The study reviews economic impacts, payment amounts, funding sources, and administrative costs. It focuses on caregivers for people who need help with daily living as certified by a licensed doctor, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner, including seniors 60+, people with Alzheimer’s, and children or adults with developmental or functional disabilities cared for by an adult relative or informal caregiver age 18+. The final report is due by July 1, 2028. The law stays in effect through June 30, 2029.
