Executive director becomes merit employee

Beginning October 1, 2026, the Commission’s executive director is a merit employee in the skilled service. The job is not a special appointee. Pay comes from the State budget.

Commission for Women expands its work

Beginning October 1, 2026, the Maryland Commission for Women takes on broader duties. It studies women’s status, researches gaps, and runs programs, seminars, and trainings. It promotes women’s organizations, advises on laws for wage equality and health, and can appoint advisory committees. It acts as a clearinghouse, must file an annual report, and cannot adopt regulations.

Priority funding for African American heritage

Beginning October 1, 2026, the state renames the program as the Speaker Adrienne A. Jones African American Heritage Preservation Program. The program sits in the State Trust under State Finance and Procurement. Sustainable communities get priority for state funding under this program. This steers more grant dollars to projects that preserve African American heritage in those communities.
