Insurance must cover menopause care

Starting January 1, 2027, Maryland health plans must cover evaluation and management of menopause and related symptoms. Your treating provider decides what care is needed. This applies to insurers, nonprofit health service plans, and HMOs that provide hospital, medical, or surgical benefits. The rule applies to policies, contracts, and plans issued, delivered, or renewed in Maryland on or after January 1, 2027.

Advisory council adds menopause expertise

On October 1, 2026, the State Advisory Council on Health and Wellness changes its membership. The Executive Director of the Maryland Commission for Women, or a designee, joins without term limits. One seat must be held by a member with menopause care expertise. Public membership is reduced from 18 to 17.

Extra continuing education for menopause training

Beginning October 1, 2026, boards that require continuing education must give at least 2 CE hours for each 1 hour of approved menopause training. This only counts for licensees and certificate holders who evaluate and manage menopause within their scope of practice. The Maryland Department of Health must identify at least one training program, after consulting menopause experts, including the Menopause Society. Boards may set a maximum number of menopause CE credits by regulation.
