Beginning July 13, 2026, Maryland runs a Prescription Drug Repository Program. The State Board of Pharmacy approves which pharmacies and drop-off sites can join, and sites cannot have a final disciplinary order. Approved pharmacies can accept donated prescription and over-the-counter drugs and medical supplies and may dispense safe donations to eligible patients. They also take returned drugs and supplies for proper disposal. The program ends June 30, 2028 and can lower your medicine costs if you qualify and your local pharmacy participates.
Beginning July 13, 2026, Maryland runs a Redirecting Safe Prescription Drugs Pilot. The Health Department works with the DEA and four DEA-registered drop-off sites on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Staff separate eligible, unopened, noncontrolled prescription drugs, package them as state law requires, and send them to state repositories; controlled drugs go to the DEA. By October 1, 2027, the Department reports the numbers and types collected and any packaging problems. The pilot ends June 30, 2028 and can increase the local supply of medicines for eligible patients.
