Beginning October 1, 2026, you can keep seeing your out-of-state counselor or social worker by telehealth for a short time. The provider must be licensed and in good standing in another state; for social work, this also includes graduate social work students in accredited or candidate programs. Your treatment relationship must have started while you were outside Maryland, and you are now located in Maryland. Telehealth, as defined in § 1–1001, is allowed for continuity of care for up to 6 months after you relocate to Maryland or after you return to Maryland following a continuous and nonincidental period living outside the State.
Beginning October 1, 2026, Maryland ends the temporary telehealth license for out-of-state counselors who served Maryland students. The 6-month, nonrenewable license and its application rules are repealed. Students who used that path may have fewer options for out-of-state telehealth counseling.
