When alcohol license holders get refunds

Beginning July 1, 2026, license holders can get a refund of the unearned fee when they surrender a license in seven cases. These include: receivership or bankruptcy with no transfer (paid to creditors); death of the holder (paid to the estate); and when the holder volunteers for or is called into the Uniformed Services or State militia. A refund also applies when you surrender a license and get a higher‑fee license; the unearned amount is credited against the new fee. If charges were pending at renewal and you are later found guilty and the license is revoked, the refund is based on the date revocation is final. If a court reverses an issuance by the Executive Director or a local board and operation is barred, the refund is based on the date the refusal is final. Refunds also apply when the government takes the licensed premises for public use.

Most alcohol license fees nonrefundable

Beginning July 1, 2026, alcoholic beverage license fees are not refundable when a license is surrendered. Refunds are allowed only in the specific cases listed in law.
