Driver test adds motorcycle safety questions

Beginning October 1, 2026, Maryland’s driver exam includes motorcycle safety awareness. The question pool must have at least five motorcycle safety questions. Each test includes at least one of those questions. Topics include seeing motorcycles, proper lane position, safe following distance, and preventing crashes. The MVA may add other motorcycle safety topics.

Easier license waivers; vision test still required

Beginning October 1, 2026, the Motor Vehicle Administration can waive license exams for some applicants. You qualify if you hold a valid Maryland license, hold a valid license from another U.S. state or territory, D.C., Puerto Rico, or Canada, or you apply for Class M after finishing the Administration-approved basic motorcycle safety course. The Administration does not waive the vision exam, except for a corrected license if you passed an acceptable vision test in the last 12 months.

New vehicle and escort rules for road tests

Beginning October 1, 2026, you must bring a vehicle suited to the license class you want. You cannot use an autocycle for the test. Learner’s permit holders must be accompanied by a qualified, licensed driver. Class M permit holders may haul a motorcycle by truck if licensed to drive that truck, or ride with a licensed truck driver. You may also be driven to the exam by someone licensed for the test vehicle.
