Maryland health professionals face broader discipline rules

Beginning October 1, 2026, Maryland health boards have broader grounds to discipline covered applicants, license holders, and registrants. Grounds include discipline by another state's or country's licensing authority, or conviction or discipline by its courts. They also include discipline by any branch of the U.S. uniformed services or the Department of Veterans Affairs. The underlying conduct must also qualify for discipline under the Maryland board's laws. Boards can deny licenses or registrations, issue reprimands, impose probation, or suspend or revoke credentials; social workers can also face fines. Actions generally require a majority vote of serving board members and must follow the applicable hearing procedures.
