New statewide plan for aging Marylanders

Beginning October 1, 2026, the Department of Aging leads the Longevity Ready Maryland Plan. The plan builds a longevity ecosystem, grows economic opportunity, prepares people to afford longer lives, and improves health and mobility. The Secretary evaluates needs, sets priorities, and coordinates state and local programs. The Department runs a public information, referral, and counseling system and a website to track progress. The Secretary updates the comprehensive plan by July 1, 2029, and every four years after.

Stronger Commission on Aging leadership

Beginning October 1, 2026, the Commission on Aging is broadened and more diverse. The Governor appoints local aging directors, advocates, experts, interested residents, and a veteran; one Senator and one Delegate also serve. The Department of Aging provides staff. The Secretary names the chair and may name a vice chair. The chair can set up subcommittees and work with local commissions. A member who attends under half of meetings in any 12 months is considered to have resigned. Initial terms are staggered: four end in 2028, five in 2029, and five in 2030. The Commission reviews progress and advises on laws and policies to carry out the plan.
