Health plans must cover orthoses and prostheses

Beginning January 1, 2027, Maryland health plans must cover, at least once each year, orthoses and prostheses. Plans must also cover parts, repairs, and medically needed replacements. They cannot set higher copays or coinsurance, or separate annual or lifetime dollar caps, for these devices. Coverage includes devices needed for daily life, work, or exercise, and custom-made braces. Medical-necessity rules may not be stricter than Medicare guidance. This applies to plans issued, delivered, or renewed in Maryland on or after that date.

Medicaid covers orthoses in 2027

Beginning January 1, 2027, Maryland Medicaid covers orthoses. Coverage follows the state’s orthoses standards. Devices, components, repairs, and medically needed replacements are included. A provider must decide they are medically necessary, using Medicare guidance. This lowers out-of-pocket costs for people on Medicaid who need braces or supports.

Network and reporting rules for orthoses

Starting January 1, 2027, insurers that use provider networks for orthoses must follow state network rules. Insurers and Medicaid managed care plans must also report orthoses claims data for 2027–2030. They must file by June 30, 2032. State agencies combine the data and send a report to lawmakers by December 31, 2032.
