Beginning October 1, 2026, licensed security guard agencies in Maryland may place or hire only certified security guards. Agencies must confirm a worker’s certification with the Secretary of State Police before placement. People without certification cannot be provided for guard work through these agencies.
Beginning October 1, 2026, Maryland sets clear steps to renew a security guard certification. Your certificate expires on the last day of your birth month unless you renew for a 3-year term. The Secretary of State Police emails you renewal notices 90, 60, and 30 days before it expires. Your renewal must be received and accepted before expiration, and you must file and pay using a method the Secretary allows. To renew, you must still qualify, pay a $10 renewal fee and the FBI fingerprint check cost, and complete 8 hours of approved training and send proof. The Secretary renews certifications for people who meet these rules and sends written notice within 5 days if renewal is refused. You cannot be certified or renewed if you have outstanding obligations under this subtitle.
