More renewal time and savings for guards

Beginning October 1, 2026, Maryland security guards no longer face a 90-day advance deadline for renewal applications. Applications must be received and accepted before expiration. Each renewal lasts 3 years, with certification expiring on the last day of the guard’s birth month. State Police must send reminders to the guard’s last known email address at least 90, 60, and 30 days before expiration. Guards must submit the required application, pay $10 plus any FBI fingerprint check cost, and remain eligible for certification. They must also document 8 hours of continuing security training approved by the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission. The law ends the $5-per-day late renewal fee, but outstanding obligations can still block certification. The Secretary must renew certifications for eligible applicants who meet these requirements and give written notice within 5 days of refusing renewal.

Less renewal paperwork for security guard employers

Beginning October 1, 2026, Maryland security guard agencies and employers no longer file a declaration before a guard’s certification expires. The former filing was due at least 90 days before expiration and was made under penalties of perjury. It stated whether the employer knew the guard no longer met certification rules. Licensed guard agencies still may employ and provide for hire only guards certified by the Secretary of State Police.
