Beginning July 1, 2026, members and former members of Maryland’s Law Enforcement Officers’ Pension System who were assigned as helicopter pilots in a State law enforcement aviation unit can get their military service counted toward their LEOPS pension. They can get this credit even if another retirement system also gives credit for the same military service. You usually must earn at least 10 years of State service credit before military time is added, and retirees are not eligible. Total military service credit under this rule is capped at 5 years. Guard or Reserve time not activated under Title 10 counts 4 months per full year (up to 36 months), and service academy time counts 4 months per year (up to 16 months).
Starting July 1, 2026, you can claim military service credit under this rule only once. This applies to members and former members of Maryland State retirement systems. It stops people from double-counting the same military service across pension systems.
