Annual reports on safety and disability access

Beginning July 1, 2026, each school system sends a report to the Center by August 1 for the prior school year. Reports include times a school was inaccessible for a student with a disability in ways that could block evacuation or emergency response. They also include totals for threats, lockdowns, evacuations, any plan failures, and the number of hours spent in emergencies or drills. These reports are no longer automatically confidential and may be available under public records law. School systems must use the findings to update plans and fix weaknesses.

Stronger emergency plans for disabled students

Beginning July 1, 2026, school systems must check for disability access problems during regular safety reviews. Reviews must find barriers that could slow evacuation or emergency help and create fixes. By August 1 each year, every public school updates its emergency plan. Plans include detailed steps to accommodate students with disabilities during lockdowns, evacuations, and other emergencies. The Center reviews plans and gives comments.
