Grants help seniors stay at home

Beginning July 1, 2026, the Maryland Department of Aging gives grants to nonprofits and area agencies on aging. The money can start or grow programs that help seniors live at home. Covered help includes in‑home care, health management, care coordination, rides, and home safety fixes. Grants can also support senior villages and events at multigenerational third places, including rent or lease costs. Key terms like aging‑in‑place program, multigenerational third place, and senior village are now defined in law.

Annual funding for aging‑in‑place grants

Beginning July 1, 2026, the Governor must include at least $100,000 each year in the budget for these grants. At least 20% of that funding supports senior villages. This creates a small statewide funding floor for aging‑in‑place services.

Rules and timing for grant awards

Beginning July 1, 2026, the Department of Aging must post grant opportunities at least 6 weeks before applications are due. To expand an existing program, applicants must show a dollar‑for‑dollar match for the amount requested. The Department sets award amounts after reviewing all eligible applicants, total funds, and area needs with area agencies and area plans. After an award to a nonprofit in an area agency’s region, the Department notifies that agency within 2 weeks. The Department may issue rules for applications, reviews, and payments.
