Pharmacists can treat opioid addiction

Beginning July 1, 2026, pharmacists can treat opioid use disorder under a prescriber–pharmacist agreement. The pharmacist must register with the DEA and the state controlled substances office, finish required training, and follow an approved protocol. The protocol can cover starting, changing, continuing, or stopping medicine and related lab tests. Before starting or changing any controlled‑substance therapy, the pharmacist must check the state Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. This gives patients more local options for treatment with safety checks.

Midwives can join pharmacy agreements

Beginning July 1, 2026, certified midwives count as authorized prescribers in Maryland. They can sign prescriber–pharmacist agreements and use disease‑specific drug therapy protocols. This may make it easier for patients who see midwives to get care through a team approach.

Pharmacy agreements filed with Board

Beginning July 1, 2026, pharmacists who enter a prescriber–pharmacist agreement must send the agreement, any changes, and protocols to the Maryland Board of Pharmacy. Authorized prescribers no longer file these agreements with their own licensing board. This shifts paperwork to pharmacists and gives the Board of Pharmacy a single record for oversight.
