Beginning July 1, 2026, every county with a volunteer fire company offers no-cost preventive cancer screenings to volunteer firefighters and retired volunteer firefighters who served with a company in that county. Screenings follow the latest International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) guidelines. Counties can meet this by giving a free yearly exam that includes the recommended screenings, or by using a state grant to pay for new screening tests, like a multi-cancer blood test. A retired volunteer must have fought fires, received length-of-service award program (LOSAP) benefits for at least 5 years, completed at least 3 years of service, and earned at least 50 LOSAP points or the same under a similar point system. A volunteer firefighter is someone who is actively involved in fire suppression and volunteers with a company in the county. A volunteer fire company includes a volunteer fire department.
Starting July 1, 2026, each volunteer fire company must keep an up-to-date list of its active and retired volunteer firefighters. The company must give the list to its county by October 1 each year and when asked. Each county must keep a countywide list built from the company lists. These rosters help counties find and schedule people for the free cancer screenings.
