State Police retirement age now 62

Starting June 1, 2026, most Maryland State Police members must retire by the first day of the month after they turn 62. This raises the mandatory age from 60 to 62. The Secretary of State Police has separate rules and is not subject to this age limit.

Updated DROP rules and one-time extension

Starting June 1, 2026, members under 62 can join DROP if they have 22 to under 32 years of service (started before July 1, 2011) or 25 to under 32 years (started on/after that date). The Secretary’s DROP eligibility still follows years of service and is not capped by age. The longest DROP term is the smallest of: 7 years; 32 years minus your service when you join; 62 minus your age when you join; or the term you pick. For most members, DROP ends by the first day of the month after you turn 62. If you started DROP before June 1, 2026 and are still in it, you can elect one extension. The extension is the smaller of: 7 years minus what you first chose, or 32 years minus your service when you joined, and it cannot push you past age 62. You must elect by your original end date or December 31, 2026, whichever comes first, using the Board form with HR’s signed acknowledgment.
