Fines for uncleared snow and ice

Beginning October 1, 2026, fines apply if you are convicted of not clearing dangerous snow or ice. Noncommercial vehicles: $25 first, $50 second, $100 third, $200 fourth or later. Commercial vehicles: $75 first, $150 second, $300 third, $600 fourth, $1,000 fifth or later. Each day can be a separate violation, but you cannot be found to violate more than once in any 24 hours. If your violation helps cause a crash with property damage, death, or serious injury, fines rise to $200–$1,000 for noncommercial and $500–$1,500 for commercial vehicles.

Drivers must clear snow and ice

Beginning October 1, 2026, you must make reasonable efforts to remove snow and ice from exposed surfaces before driving or towing if it could harm people or property. Exposed surfaces include the hood, trunk, windshield, every window, the roof, truck cabs, and trailer or semitrailer tops. Police can enforce this only as a secondary action during another lawful stop, except when the violation is tied to a serious crash. You are excepted if clearing the snow or ice would break workplace‑safety laws or threaten your health or safety.
