Tax-exempt status confirmed for Maryland’s disability council

Beginning July 1, 2026, Maryland recognizes its Statewide Independent Living Council as a tax-exempt public corporation and state entity. The law records that the Governor created the Council by executive order in 1993 under the federal Rehabilitation Act. The Council must work with Centers for Independent Living to submit, monitor, carry out, and evaluate Maryland’s independent living plan. It must also fulfill other duties required by state law and the federal Rehabilitation Act to support that plan. The law specifies no direct change to household taxes, benefits, or services.
