Beginning July 1, 2026, Maryland recognizes the Statewide Independent Living Council as a tax-exempt body politic and corporate and an instrumentality of the State. The law requires the Council to work with Centers for Independent Living to submit, carry out, and evaluate the State Plan. The Council also performs other duties under Maryland law and the federal Rehabilitation Act to support the plan. This strengthens coordination and helps keep independent living services on track for people with disabilities.
