Maryland residents gain pharmacist vaccine orders

Beginning October 1, 2026, Maryland pharmacists can order certain vaccines for people age 3 or older without giving the shot. This covers flu vaccines, COVID-19 vaccines, and vaccines used in response to a public health emergency. Pharmacists need at least 20 hours of approved practical training covering injections, vaccine suitability, and emergency reactions. They also need current basic CPR certification and at least 2 hours of approved vaccine education for license renewal. Orders must follow a written, vaccine-specific protocol and record-keeping rules. When ordering a vaccine for an adult caregiver to give a minor, pharmacists must explain the importance of well-child visits. They must inform the child and caregiver and refer the child to a pediatric primary care provider when appropriate. Pharmacists must report both ordered and administered vaccines to ImmuNet, Maryland’s vaccination record system.
