Broader lead protections for shared housing renters

Beginning October 1, 2026, Maryland expands its rental unit definition under the existing lead-risk housing law. A room or group of rooms must form one habitable rental unit meant for permanent living by one or more people. Permanent facilities for living, sleeping, eating, cooking, and sanitation can be inside the unit or accessible outside it. Existing exclusions remain for areas not used for these activities and secured areas occupants cannot enter. Hotel, motel, and similar seasonal or temporary lodging units, plus units not offered for rent, also remain excluded.
