Insurers must cover supervised mental health interns

Starting January 1, 2027, Maryland health plans must pay for care by graduate clinical interns. It covers counseling, social work, and psychology in outpatient clinics. Your plan must already cover those services when done by a licensed professional. The intern must be in a graduate program, work under direct supervision, and the licensed supervisor must bill. Plans cannot deny a claim just because an intern delivered the care. This applies to policies issued, delivered, or renewed in Maryland on or after January 1, 2027.
