Public employees can buy federal service credit

Members of the Maine Public Employees Retirement System who worked as nonmilitary federal employees before joining can buy service credit for that time. You can buy up to 5 years. You must pay the full actuarial cost, with regular interest; this equals the value of the extra benefit at retirement. You must finish payment before your retirement benefit starts. You can pay in one lump sum or by annual direct payments under MPERS rules.
