Legislature must approve island ferry overnight docking
The law stops DOT from making permanent changes to where state ferries dock overnight on islands without approval from the Legislature. DOT must submit a bill to the Legislature’s transportation committee before any permanent change. In an emergency or other significant operational need, DOT can make a temporary switch to a mainland port or another island port without approval. A temporary change does not alter the ferry’s common overnight docking pattern. This protects routine access for island communities but allows short disruptions for safety or operations.
