Voluntary checkout donations for Maine wildlife
The law creates the Make Change for Wildlife program. Businesses may ask for small, voluntary donations at checkout. If a business collects money, it must deposit it with the State Treasurer and tag it for the Maine Endangered and Nongame Wildlife Fund. The Treasurer credits the donations to that fund, which can be used only for its stated purposes. The law repeals an older subsection and replaces it with this program. The department must report on the program by January 1, 2026, and lawmakers may consider follow-up bills.
