Steroid prescriptions no longer tracked by state

The law removes anabolic steroids from Maine’s prescription drug monitoring program. Doctors and pharmacists stop reporting steroid prescriptions to the state database. Starting on the law’s effective date, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services must delete all past steroid prescribing and dispensing records. This improves patient privacy. No action is needed from patients or providers.

State funds drug monitoring database updates

The state provides $62,000 from the General Fund in fiscal year 2026-27 to maintain and update the drug monitoring database. It also provides a one-time $15,000 in 2026-27 to purge steroid records. This pays for IT work so the system stops tracking steroids and removes old records. It does not create new fees or tasks for patients or prescribers.
