Dental plans must cover hygienists

The law requires individual, employer group, and HMO dental plans to cover care done by licensed dental hygienists. Coverage applies when your plan already lists the service as covered and the work is within the hygienist’s legal scope. The hygienist must be licensed in Maine as an independent practice dental hygienist or a dental hygienist. The law does not set payment rates or add new covered services; it makes sure the same covered service is paid even when a hygienist provides it.
