Stronger child protection rules for families
Beginning June 10, 2025, the law widens what counts as child abuse or neglect. Sexual abuse or exploitation now counts, including crimes in Title 17‑A, sections 282, 852, 853, and 855. Child sex trafficking by any person counts as abuse, even if the person is not a caregiver. Neglect includes failing to provide food, clothing, shelter, education, or medical care when the caregiver can pay or has been offered lawful, reasonable financial help. Child protection agencies can investigate and act on these grounds.
