New annual tax on camper trailers

Beginning January 1, 2026, Maine charges an annual excise tax on each camper trailer based on its overall length. For new registrations, you must pay before registering and it covers one year from your registration date. The schedule sets flat amounts by length (for example, under 13 feet $6; 52–under 53 feet $352). For trailers 53 feet or longer, the tax is $352 plus $18 for each extra foot, rounding up. Assessors must use the length schedule and cannot tax by value or age. Each year by September 15, the assessor sets next year’s amounts using chained CPI, and the index cannot reduce amounts from the prior year.
