Affidavit transfers for estates up to $40,000

Maine now lets you collect a decedent’s personal property by affidavit when the estate’s net value is $40,000 or less. Net value means the value of the entire estate, wherever it is, minus liens and encumbrances. The $40,000 limit is adjusted for inflation under Maine law. Each county probate court publishes the current limit every year on its public website.
