New commission on college policy

The law creates a 14-member commission to update Maine’s higher education policy. Members include two senators and two representatives from the Education Committee, one from each of the two largest parties in each chamber. Other members include a faculty union rep, a State Board of Education rep, and a private colleges rep. Leaders or trustees from the University of Maine System, the community colleges, and Maine Maritime, and the Education Commissioner, also serve or name designees. Appointers must consider race, gender, income, and geography. The commission may meet no more than 8 times. It must report findings and proposed laws to the Legislature’s education committee by November 4, 2026. That committee may file a bill in 2027. The law takes effect immediately.
