Triple refunds for unauthorized auto-renewals
If a seller bills you without authorization for a subscription or health club membership, you get a refund or credit equal to three times the unauthorized charges. The Maine Attorney General enforces this rule and may issue rules to carry it out. If the violation was an error and the seller fully refunds all billed amounts from the renewal date until the service ends or the next renewal notice, an action may not be brought.
Stronger renewal rules for subscriptions and gyms
Beginning January 1, 2026, sellers who target Maine consumers must follow clearer auto‑renewal rules. Health club memberships are covered, along with other subscriptions. Sellers must show the price, how often you are charged, and the refund policy in a clear way. They must get your express OK, like a checkbox or e‑signature, before enrollment. You must be able to cancel online the same way you signed up; any cancel phone line must be toll‑free and easy to find. Marketing may not mislead you about renewal terms. For plans that renew for 12 months or more, the seller must send a clear renewal notice no more than 30 days before the renewal date. Some nonprofit, school, government, incidental, and specified health care facilities are excluded.
