Stronger reporting for jail oversight boards
The law requires each county jail board of visitors to send its annual report to every other board in Maine. By December 3, 2025, each county sheriff must send a report to the Joint Standing Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety. The sheriff’s report must cover each jail or county correctional facility they oversee. It must list steps to meet board membership rules, current challenges, the number of appointed members, and whether a board is inactive and for how long. The committee may submit follow-up legislation based on these reports.
