Maine agencies must explain record denials

In Maine, public bodies that deny a records request must send you a written notice within 5 working days of getting your request. The notice must state the reason and cite the exact law used for the denial. An agency may deny, in whole or in part, if a request is unduly burdensome or oppressive, but only if it follows subsection 4-A. If the agency does not send the required notice, it counts as failing to allow inspection or copying, and you can appeal under section 409.
