Dentists set prices for uncovered care

The law protects participating Maine dental providers. Insurers, group plans, and HMOs cannot make them use plan-set fees for services the plan does not cover. For covered dental services, the plan must set fees in good faith, and the fees cannot be nominal. A service counts as covered even if payment is limited by a deductible, copay, coinsurance, a waiting period, annual or lifetime maximums, frequency limits, or an alternative benefit rule. These rules apply to individual, group, and HMO dental coverage.
