Seaweed permits can require a course

Maine’s marine resources commissioner can require a course before an individual gets or renews a seaweed permit. The Department of Marine Resources or a public or private group approved by the commissioner can provide the course. For requirements covering only certain seaweed species, the commissioner can require a permit endorsement for those species at no charge. The law does not set a course fee. The department must report findings and recommendations on the course’s implementation to the Legislature’s marine resources committee by February 1, 2028. The committee can introduce a bill based on that report in the Second Regular Session of the 133rd Legislature.
