Maine bans sweepstakes, funds addiction help

Maine bans running, promoting, or supporting online sweepstakes games that use two currencies and copy casino-style games. The ban covers games on phones, computers, and similar devices; violations bring civil fines of $10,000–$100,000 per violation and criminal liability. People found in violation cannot get covered state gambling licenses. Current licenses can be revoked after a related unlawful-gambling conviction or a violation finding through the license’s review process. The Gambling Control Unit sends all collected fines to a new gambling addiction fund for research, prevention, and treatment; unused money carries forward.
