Updated breakdown warning rules for trucks

In Maine, trucks and truck tractors registered for operation with a gross weight over 10,000 pounds must carry three flares or three two-way reflective triangles. The exception in Maine law, 29-A MRSA §1952(1-A), still applies. This replaces the old equipment requirement for red flags and flares, lanterns, or reflectors. When a covered vehicle is disabled on a public road, operators must place three two-way reflective triangles. One goes at least 100 feet ahead and another at least 100 feet behind, both centered in the occupied lane. The third goes on the traffic side, at least 10 feet from the vehicle’s front or rear. Placement is required even when lights are not required, and triangles must meet federal safety standards in 49 CFR §571.125.
