Maine fire chiefs must report all responses
Maine municipal fire chiefs or their designees must report every department response to the State Fire Marshal, even without a fire. Before January 1, 2026, reports use the national fire reporting system or, if available, the national emergency response system. Starting January 1, 2026, reports must follow the national emergency response system or a federally chosen successor. The law takes effect upon approval, and the changes apply retroactively to January 1, 2026. The State Fire Marshal can adopt routine technical rules for statewide data collection and the system switch. These rules can cover electronic reports, technical help, and links to municipal reporting systems. The law provides no explicit funding and sets no penalties in these sections.
