Emergency communications directors join special retirement plan
Maine Department of Public Safety emergency communications directors employed on August 1, 2026, or hired afterward join the 1998 Special Plan. They qualify for retirement at age 55 with at least 10 years of plan service, or after 25 credited years. Their pension counts all credited service as an emergency communications director. Age-based pension cuts apply when retiring before 55 through the 25-year route. Required member contributions are 8.65% of earnable pay until 25 credited years, then 7.65%; employers can pay these contributions. The law allocates $2,467 for the position in fiscal year 2026-27.
