New security grants for Maine nonprofits

The law creates grants to protect property nonprofits own or occupy against hate crimes and terror attacks. Nonprofits must have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and show that they or their facilities face a high risk of such attacks. Grants can pay for physical security improvements, security staff, and security plans or procedures. The Maine Emergency Management Agency awards grants through a request-for-proposals process. The law provides one-time General Fund funding of $200,000 in fiscal year 2026-27, with some available for program administration. Unspent money carries forward to the next fiscal year.
