MaineCare drops prior approval for dental anesthesia

Beginning July 1, 2026, MaineCare cannot require prior approval for deep sedation or general anesthesia used during dental care. This removes an approval step for MaineCare members and their dental providers. The law applies retroactively to that date.

MaineCare sets dental provider payment rules

Beginning July 1, 2026, MaineCare sets dental deep sedation and general anesthesia payments at 67% of the commercial median benchmark. Providers must bill these services using dental codes D9222, D9223, D9224 and D9225. MaineCare also maintains temporary minimum rates for tooth extractions (D7140) and medicine applied to stop tooth decay (D1354). These rate protections last through June 30, 2028, unless new dental rates under Maine's rate-determination law take effect sooner. The law applies retroactively to July 1, 2026. For fiscal year 2026–27, it provides $55,014 to support the anesthesia payment and prior-approval changes: $17,580 from the General Fund, $31,647 from the Federal Expenditures Fund and $5,787 from the Federal Block Grant Fund. Each fund provides $0 for fiscal year 2025–26.
