State job protections for veterans and spouses

Maine agencies must offer interviews for classified-service jobs to veterans, Gold Star spouses, and spouses of eligible service members. Applicants must meet the job’s minimum qualifications; an interview does not guarantee a job. Eligible service members include people on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces or actively serving in the Reserves or National Guard. During state workforce reductions, veterans and spouses of eligible service members receive priority to keep their jobs. This priority applies over other employees in the same job classification with equal seniority, status, and performance.
