New housing help for Maine veterans

The law creates a Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services grant program to support permanent housing for veterans. Grants go to IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofits with a core program supporting permanent housing for veterans. Grants can fund housing-provider incentives, payments to cover risks, and past rent debt payments for veterans experiencing homelessness. The law provides $90,000 in one-time grant funding for 2026–27, transferred from the Sports Wagering account by June 30, 2027. The new fund can also receive state and federal money and private donations. The Bureau can adopt program rules, including reporting requirements for grant recipients. It must report grants and recipients’ use of funds to the Legislature’s veterans affairs committee by February 15, 2027. Reports are also due by February 15 in any year when a grant is issued.
