Maine changes elevator and fire-alarm rules

Maine's building-code board must start rulemaking by September 1, 2026, to remove two elevator requirements. These cover smoke-and-draft protection at elevator shaft doors and two-way emergency video communication systems inside elevators. The law requires rulemaking, not immediate removal of these protections. Removing them may lower construction costs but also ends these required safeguards. The State Fire Marshal must also adopt the 2025 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, known as NFPA 72.
