Guaranteed ferries for Maine islanders

The Maine DOT must run ferry routes to North Haven, Vinalhaven, Islesboro, Matinicus Isle, and Swan’s Island. It may also run service to Frenchboro. Ferries carry people, vehicles, and freight. Service to Matinicus happens at least 12 trips a year and up to 36; more trips can be added if island residents and the DOT agree. The DOT can use state boats or hire private boats, and must follow its agreement with the state employee union when doing so during repairs or very high demand.
