Reliable ferry service for island communities
The law requires the Maine DOT to run ferries to Matinicus Isle at least 12 times each year. The old 36‑trip cap is gone, and extra trips can happen if Matinicus residents and the department agree. Ferries can be state boats or privately contracted boats. During repairs, maintenance, or very busy times, the department can hire private boats to add or replace service. Any use of private boats must follow the agreement with the state’s union representative.
