No prior authorization for nonprofit air ambulances
Health insurers in Maine cannot require prior authorization for urgent air ambulance trips if the provider is a nonprofit. This applies to trips to a hospital or between hospitals. Insurers also cannot require prior authorization for ground ambulances to take you to a hospital, move you between hospitals, or move you from a hospital to a nursing home, hospice, or other licensed facility. The law is in effect now and applies retroactively to August 9, 2024.
